Ayamonte
Just ten minutes drive away is the town of Ayamonte. The Ayamonte area is regarded by many as the "Jewel in the Crown" of the Huelva province tourist industry and perhaps the whole of the Costa de la Luz.
The Spanish Algarve's climate is one of the main attractions. Long and hot summers with little rainfall and mild winters make the area an ideal all year round holiday destination. When what little rain there is does come it tends to be in the form of rainstorms which quickly give way to clear blue skies and sunshine. The area averages 8 hours sun for every day of the year.
Ayamonte is the real, unspoilt Spain where you can sit under a tree and enjoy a coffee, the atmosphere and charm of the place or soak up the sun on the nearby beaches at Isla Canela.
Spain is well known for its carnivals and fiestas which are plentiful in this area. The Ayamonte Carnival, in February, and the Feria, in the middle of September, are well worth seeing, book yourself a week off afterwards to recover!
Ayamonte is a town of quaint back streets and large open squares, or plazas as they are know in Spanish.
There are plenty of bars and restaurants where you can enjoy the local specialties such as the locally caught fish or Jamón de Jabugo ham made in the local mountains.
Isla Canela is a beach lovers paradise with six kilometers of quiet beaches. The beach is long and wide bordered at parts by a barrier of sand dunes, and is excellent for long walks. When you just want to relax even at the busiest time of the year you will still be able to find a spot where all you can hear is the sound of the waves. Points of access to the beach are suitable for the disabled. The wooden walkways extend halfway down the beach. There is a bicycle lane nearby, alongside the road, which can also be used for skating.
Other Attractions in the area include several water parks and the beaches of the Portuguese algarve just across the River Guadiana bridge which is the border between Spain and Portugal. For the more adventurous you can go karting at the Kartodromo de Cartaya near the El Rompido Golf Club or take some kite surfing lessons. The Donana National Park, about 40 minutes away, is a haven for wildlife and is a great day out. It is a natural haven for migrating birds and also offers protected habitation for the Iberian Lynx.
This area of Spain and Portugal really does have something for everyone and is a great opportunity to experience the local life.
